After all those testimonys, I wonder how those anti-piracy groups can =
say
abandonware harm copyrighted material, when we all know that even people =
who
had the original media can't make them work now.

Objet=A0: Re: [steem] Atari Questionaire

> Why not tell us about your own Atari story?

Ok, my turn...

1981: Bought a ZX81. Learnt Basic. 6 months later learnt Z80.
This computer taught me a lot. I got it to make different tones
(it made 2 sounds on/off to record to tapes), and figured out how
to make it display 220 x 192 "Hi rez graphics". I started at age
      10.

1985: Got a BBC B (6502/32 Kb), and learnt a lot more. In particular
sound synthesis, sprites, more mucking with the video controller
to make the only I believe 4bit upwards hard scroll on the Beeb.
Great computer but had no friends to exchange stuff with. Finally
bought a Floppy Disk Drive ! instead of using tape.

1987 (?) Sold my BBC B :-(. Instead of buying an Archimedes, bought an
Atari ST because friends had it. Wrote one of the first
soundtrackers ever, and eventually the fastest one ever written on
a 68000. This formed part of "HMS Soundtracker" sold by ESAT
Software. Founded the group "Technocrats" with Ajrarn -- no
released demos, but we joined with ST-Connexion and I released 4.5
demos. Figured out hardscroll independently, made a 5 line
hardscroller, the only 4-bit hardscroller on Atari ST. Wrote the
ST-MAG series of articles on overscan which were the basis for
Flix' TOS magazine articles on the same. Co-wrote a game with ATM
of Naos and Ajrarn, but didn't release it due to university. My
main demo is in Punish your machine. Wrote tons of stuff, mostly
     unreleased...

> How many do you have?

Two. One in europe packed, and one here in the US. When I moved here I
was too poor to bring it :-(. So I bought another one a few weeks ago on
ebay :-)

> > Which model?

Atari ST 520, expanded to 1 Mb. In Europe, don't remember.

> How much do you like it?

I knew its hardware backwards. 1st step of Demo writing: turn the OS
off. Very different from nowadays.

> Are you some of you not working in the computer industry now?

Yup, at AMD.

> How do you still like to use them?

Well, I'm trying to run TurboAssembler (one of the best programs ever
written) on STEEM, to start coding again.

> Do you use Steem in conjunction with your real machine?

Yup.

> What are your favourite programs/games?

- Demos
- TurboAssembler
- Goldrunner :-)
- Return to Genesis
- Enchanted Land
- Alien8 on the BBC B
- The Sentinel on the BBC B
- Elite on the BBC B

My favourite activity was coding.

> Do you mainly use original discs or ones found on the Internet?

Internet nowadays. I don't know whether my originals still in Europe
still work...

> How do you share your time of personal use between Atari and PC?

Linux 95%. Atari 5%. But on Linux Steem/hatari... Depends how nostalgic
I am.
