That’s not how it works, they probably did like other receivers, just not at
that point in the draft in terms of how they valued the players remaining on
the board with their picks. They could have forced something or reached, but
they had other needs that met up better with that portion of the draft, so they
went elsewhere.
I don’t think they are hanging Lamar out to dry, either, there’s a lot of
pressure on Bateman, but they are getting their top two running backs returning
from injury, Proche and Duvernay are capable and they are 4 deep at tight end
as well now. Season doesn’t start for another 4 months and they have ample time
to add to the group.
They’ll be fine.

There’s a lot that has to play out, he has to perform, he can get a good
contract that is cap friendly if he does well or the Steelers can get a good
compensatory pick if he does well and then leaves.
Or it becomes one of the worst draft day trades in team history (though the
knee injury in year 2 derailed everything)
One other note, lovely detail from Peter King today that the Steelers beat
the Ravens to Calvin Austin, who the Ravens coveted with one of their 4th
round picks.
