Stanley, The story of the Jewish leaders telling Pilate to let the blood of Jesus be on their heads sounds as reasonable as any other story in the Old Testament. Pilate was certainly a historical figure, and from all accounts, he did offer the Jews a choice between crucifying Jesus or Barabbas. So to answer your question, yes, I believe the story is essentially true. I also agree with the Pope about forgiveness. That was, after all, one of the main tenants of Christ's ministry. But I also believe that words and actions have inevitable consequences. I think the universe is always listening. What is prayer if not a release of vibrations that extend to infinity. The biblical Jews committed a terrible and cowardly act. And I don't recall any account of them asking for forgiveness. Christianity teaches that even when forgiveness is asked, atonement must be met. I'm not saying that the Holocaust was that atonement but the horror of it was of such magnitude you have to wonder.
