    Telescopes from the Ground Up

Today's site, from the preeminent Space Telescope Science Institute at The
Johns Hopkins University campus in Maryland, offers a splendid "All You Ever
Wanted to Know About Telescopes But Forgot to Ask." Gentle Subscribers will
discover a detailed chronicle of man's search of the heavens and the scientific
discoveries which have allowed him to explore the stars.

"Explore the history of telescopes, from Galileo to NASA's Great
Observatories." - from the website

Designed for the general public as well as education professionals, the
presentation features information on the development of the telescope, from the
controversy over what it revealed, in Galileo versus the Establishment, to the
soaring revelations of the latest space telescope. Details on refracting and
reflecting telescopes illustrate their differences, while Basic Science links
serve as handy references to explain essential concepts. An additional
highlight includes biographies of notable figures in the history of telescope
advancement, from the well-known Sir Isaac Newton to the more obscure but
notable George Ellery Hale, instrumental in the building of the Palomar
Observatory in California.
