The transform live playback option is similar to the scale velocity and
length options in Sonar. It's a dialog with two pages, one for velocity and
one for length. You can use them to shape velocities and durations over
time.

Hairpins are the correct way to show "swells" and "falls" in the volume but
they don't always playback properly. The reason for this is that Sibelius
only adjusts the velocities near hairpins which means that long sustained
notes will remain at a constant volume. However, there is a plug-in which
can add MIDI CC messages to affect the dynamics around hairpins. The only
down side to this is that you'll end up with a large number of text items
containing MIDI messages around the hairpin.

thank you for your help. I've looked for what you said, and the only thing I
found about velocity were 2 radio buttons in a submenu called transform
live playback which is in the playback menu. But it didn't solve my problem.
Adding expression hairpins seems to be easier but I didn't understand all of
it yet.

In addition to Kevin's tip (he's got a good memory for these things) your
question as to velocity of the MIDI notes is correct.
Sibelius (in the play menu) has a selection to allow the original MIDI
velocities to come through or to set them to a nominal fixed level. It's
usually checked by default when opening a new MIDI file. Drat. I wish I
remembered what it's called, but you'll find it if you open the play menu
and arrow down a few items.
You may guess that I'm not sitting at my DAW right now.

so you mean there is no special hotkey for entering expressions.
Alternatively, I thought I saw something about Sibelius respecting the
velocity of notes input from a MIDI keyboard but I can't remember where it
is. Did I dream?

Browse through the create menu in Sibelius, and just play around with
all
the different text styles you can enter. There you will find a way to
enter
expression text.
Then look at the lines you can enter. There you will find hairpins and
other
lines that affect the playback.
I won't quote the Sibelius manual because I haven't used it very much.

I've been looking in vain in the different manuals for ways to enter

The Sibelius reference manual that comes with the software is a real
pain
to
navigate through, even after converting it to a text file. I asked
Sibelius
about an electronic copy of the entire Sibelius user guide but they said
they couldn't provide it. Is anything like this available from Sibelius
access?
