The live playback options are very sophisticated. To put it in rather crude
(and slightly distorted terms), the score can playback in one of two ways.

The first way, with live playback turned off, plays the music exactly as it
appears in the score. There are options in the performance dialog which
allow you to control how Sibelius plays back the score and some of these
options can make a big difference and stop the music from sounding like the
Silon Symphony Orchestra.

The second way is for Sibelius to play back the score exactly as you entered
it from the MIDI keyboard. This is where the live playback properties come
in. When you play a piece in from a MIDI keyboard, Sibelius automatically
quantises things so that they appear properly in the score but it also gives
each note live playback properties which store the original recorded
position, duration and velocity.

You can also edit the live playback properties after the fact. This is a
very useful tool if you need to control how Sibelius plays grace notes,
spread chords and other smaller details.

JP,

Yep. Live playback is the menu choice that either plays with all the MIDI
controllers active and notes played loosely (checked) or completely flat and
with rigid note position and duration (unchecked). It really helps when I
want to make sure my score is readable. If it sounds rigid and mechanical
with live playback off, then I know my notes are written with sensible
positions and durations.

You should visit the sib-access web site again and download the
milestone.doc file. It has some answers to your hairpin questions.

Dear Dave,
thank you for your help. I've looked for what you said, and the only thing I

found about velocity were 2 radio buttons in a submenu called transform
live playback which is in the playback menu. But it didn't solve my problem.

Adding expression hairpins seems to be easier but I didn't understand all of

it yet.

  JP,

In addition to Kevin's tip (he's got a good memory for these things) your
question as to velocity of the MIDI notes is correct.

Sibelius (in the play menu) has a selection to allow the original MIDI
velocities to come through or to set them to a nominal fixed level. It's
usually checked by default when opening a new MIDI file. Drat. I wish I
remembered what it's called, but you'll find it if you open the play menu
and arrow down a few items.

You may guess that I'm not sitting at my DAW right now.

  Thank you Dave,
so you mean there is no special hotkey for entering expressions.
Alternatively, I thought I saw something about Sibelius respecting the
velocity of notes input from a MIDI keyboard but I can't remember where it
  is. Did I dream?

    JP,

Browse through the create menu in Sibelius, and just play around with
all
the different text styles you can enter. There you will find a way to
  enter
    expression text.

Then look at the lines you can enter. There you will find hairpins and
  other
    lines that affect the playback.

I won't quote the Sibelius manual because I haven't used it very much.

    Hi all,
I've been looking in vain in the different manuals for ways to enter
  dynamic
information such as piano and forte. Instead of telling me how to do it,
could you please tell me where to look ? As a Sibelius novice, I will be
asking all sorts of silly questions like this one. This leads me to
  another
    question.
The Sibelius reference manual that comes with the software is a real
pain
  to
navigate through, even after converting it to a text file. I asked
  Sibelius
about an electronic copy of the entire Sibelius user guide but they said
they couldn't provide it. Is anything like this available from Sibelius
    access?
    Cheers,
