Hi Stephanie The flags of two eighth notes turn into beams; so you don't have flags and beams at the same time. When notes are beamed, a sighted player gets a clear rhythmic division. This is a notation convention, but very important especially in an irregular time signature. Here is another example: In a time signature of three quarters you would beam threetimes two eighth notes together. In a time signature of 6 8 you would beam twotimes 3 eighth notes. A sighted player in a three quarter sees a division of three beats in a three quarter time signature and a division of two in a 6 8 time signature. Sibelius most of times deals that for you automatically. You have to deal with it in a 7 8 time signature or 9 8 and so on. I hope, it helps Regards Claudio -----Original Message----- From: sib-access-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:sib-access-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Stephanie Mitchell Sent: Wednesday, April 08, 2009 1:41 PM To: sib-access@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [sib-access] Re: beams, lyrics Thanks. It sort of helps. but i'm not sure why you would want to group the notes? I mean, if you have 2 8th notes, you know that makes one beat so why group it when you can already work it out? And if they have flags, why do you need the beams as well? I am not sure I get it.
