IBIS buffers should be judged against the datasheet's specification and
measurements of the IC.
As long as the impedance seen by the buffer is near (whatever that means)
the 50 Ohm load usually found in the model there should be no reason the
amplitudes should not be spot on. The amplitude is set by the IV curves and
there is little reason they should not be correct. And you have to read the
datasheet to understand the output amplitude. Some give typical only and
some may give both min and max amplitudes.
The risetime seen in the IBIS model has little to do with the toggle rate of
your circuit in most cases. Yes, the risetime has to be fast enough to get
the proper amplitude in a simulation for the max frequency. But if the part
is rated say 20 MHz like some SPI systems there is no reason to expect the
rise/fall times are in the low 10s of nsec. I've seen 20 MHz SPI outputs
with rise/fall times of less than 500 psec.

The situation is simple, suppose you got around 100 ibis buffers to
compare; which figures or merit would you pursue
1* I am thinking voltage levels
2* rise time against the signal's period <- maybe
But even then, which should be the criteria to follow?
for the first, how about a 10% drop
yet for the latter i have no clue, 30% of the period
Using the following setup for the simulation in HSpice:
signal_source(variable
speed)->ibis_buffer_under_test->transmission_line(length
variation)->ibis_input_buffer_as_termination
At the end i will do a binning for speed, and the length trace at which the
former can work.
Any comments, you might have are welcomed :)
