If you already have a flash device on the board you
may be able to increase the flash size and add some
logic (CPLD) to handle the programming. I have done
this on a design which had a microprocessor and a
small CPLD that was already required for the processor
to boot. Therefore in my design the flash and CPLD
were already there so I just saved the price of the
PROM with the only cost adder being the price to step
up the size of the flash. We did it initially for
board real estate savings.
