[ SHOWGSD-L ] update on killer dog in coral spring fl

I heard last night that there were 2 small dogs inside the house, my first clue.
From a local tv station's web page, "Police said the dog was a Presa Canario,
a breed that is known as being even-tempered, intelligent, athletic, loyal to
families, protective of property and wary of strangers. Some said the breed can
be extremely vicious because it is a mix of a dog native to the Canary Islands
with a bulldog or mastiff, NBC 6's Sharon Lawson reported"
From my experience here, this is likely but only my interpretation of events.
The big dog lived outside in the yard. He had little or not contact with the
family. The woman went into the yard and may even have picked up the dog's
bowl for water or food. The untrained dog took reasonable offense at the women
coming into his territory and took what he believed to be appropiate action.
This is not what dogs are for!!! But you are the chior.
I have several club members who must keep their dogs outside. However the
dogs are socialized. I have dog sat for one club member and would again if
asked. The dogs do not live inside, for good reason. But they are wonderful
and friendly, if they know you or are introduced to you. Another member also
keeps their dogs outside, they just don't use me to dog sit. I have no problem
with their dogs either.
But I go to homes often where the people insist that the dogs must be outside
and they do not spend time with the dogs, these dogs are problems. Frequently
the owners are much worse than the dogs.
This very issue is why I tell my pet owning clients to train the dogs to live
in the house. No well trained dog will bite, much less kill, the family it
lives with. But a dog ignored, at any size, is dangerous.
I will be contacting local press on the matter.
