Well, you're right.. the average JQP shouldn't have one of these dogs... but
short of a ban, you aren't going to stop it from happening. What is needed
is more widespread education on why they are not desirable, or barring that
if you do get one it MUST be well trained and socialized from the very
beginning.
And I don't mean the kind of idiotic piece that was on TV not long ago about
the Caucasian Mtn Dog. I could just see the "my dog is badder than your dog"
types flocking to that breed after that show. shudder.....

This is a dog that wasn't properly raised or handled, and both dog and owner
paid the ultimate price. I HATE BSL, but these aren't dogs that should be
living in suburbia I don't think (this doesn't mean a ban, just that they
are not fit for that lifestyle).
They need to do the job they were bred for. It's even more important for
them than it is for our own breed! The Presa. Caucasian, and Fila have
temperaments that dictate more strongly than any other breed thenecessity to
be independent and think for themselves. These breeds were bred to have the
ability to second guess their owners if they were around in a time of
danger, because lets face it, even an officer with a patrol dog will second
guess himself. He's sending his dog after saomebody who may very well be
armed and dangerous. This dog is his partner, friend, and companion, and
while he's sending his dog in for the bite, while he has the utmost trust in
his dog's abilities, the rest of his body just has to be tense and thinking
"God I hope he makes it back OK. Maybe if I call him back now, nothing will
happen."
It is sheer restraint an officer is giving, and trust that his dog will
handle the situation away from his partner. We don't want to see our dogs
hurt, so when a wolf is attackingyour flock of sheep and you don't have the
time to get away, and you see your dog charging out there roaring like a
Lion to either kill or chase away the predator, you may inadvertently scream
"DOG COME!" Because you don't want to witness yoru dog's injury or death.
In these situations, the dog MUST make the hoice "Obey, or protect"...and
these dogs are going to protect. They HAVE to. That's what they're for.
Average Joe Idiot shouldn't have one, but in the right situations they can
be great dogs. I don't condone nor excuse these dogs actions. People
shouldn't confuse my understanding of the incident for forgiving it.
