My wonderful Serena had UAP in both elbows and a subluxated patella in one knee, all diagnosed at around a year. I thought it was pano until the xrays were done. Normally, I would agree with Kathy and put the puppy down. This bitch, however, was an exceptional companion. I spent thousands doing surgery on all 3 legs and was able to keep her in my life for 8 wonderful years. I do not regret one dollar of it, but I would not do it again. I would rather spend the money campaigning and breeding a sound dog who was also a wonderful companion. It is all a matter of priorities, I guess. Ughhhhhhh.......UAP is one of the very worst things a puppy owner can hear. I have had one experience, when I bought a pick male puppy from a lovely litter a friend had bred (friend kept the bitch). We had the diagnosis fairly early, before 6 months anyway, and I did some quick and extensive homework. (There are a variety of procedures, from removing the bone, <makes joint unsatble> to cutting a notch in the bone so that it "might" fuse etc.) And you'll have some people say do nothing if it isn't bothering the dog; case in point some dogs have it and aren't diagnosed until later in life. Turns out the bitch puppy in the afore mentioned litter also had it. We learned that the worse the bone deterioration was at the time of discovery, the lower the odds for any successful treatment. I fought that information and would have spent anything for my little guy, but a vet I've since come to really admire pulled me aside and said the prognosis was poor, that as an adult he wouldn't have been able to go up steps or jump in a car without a great deal of discomfort. We did a final set of x-rays on both puppies, reviewed them, saw how horrible they were and didn't let them wake up from the anesthesia. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done in dogs. More recently, I watched a male some folks have, who I know had the surgery done limp, head bobbing lame, around the novice ring in OB. I felt a little better about my decision. The puppy you are asking about also had FCP, which makes this case a real mess. I'm not optimistic for your friends. I'd suggest they find a vet who can lay it all out on the line for them and not one who works like a reverse ATM. I have no doubt that there are some cases that aren't so awful, and maybe one or the other of the surgical fixes have worked on occasion, but I think the prognosis will come down to just how much damage is already present in the joint. I'll tell you, after that, a dog that produces UAP is a real non starter for me. Kathy, member GSDCA, DVGSDC Celebrating generations of Dual Titled TC'd Champions visit www.geocities.com/pinehillgsds In a message dated 6/10/2009 9:41:12 P.M. Did your dog go on to live a normal life? Is there anything you would want to tell someone who's dog has it? My friends just found out thier 10 month old puppy has it. Any information is much appreciated. Sue T. ===========================================================================POST is Copyrighted 2008. All material remains the property of the original author and of GSD Communication, Inc.
