Have a 12 year old bitch with this. She was diagnosed at 10 months and
was immediately put on Vit E with selenium, glucosamine and chondroitin and
has been on it all her life. She started a slight limp around 5, but has
always been very very active. At 8 I put her on a low dose of metacam and
she has been on it since, with blood tests done every 6 months, no organ
damage. In all those years, she also did 2 rounds of pred when inflammation
was more of an issue, but always short term. She has had great quality of
life and still enjoys chasing a cat.
A few months ago my Canadian vet suggested cartrophen injections which we
have done. It has helped a lot....wish I had done this years ago.
If you can find this, same vet also recommends these injections for a
young animal just diagnosed. It helps rebuild the site of joint issue's and
osteoarthritis conditions.
Surgery was never recommended as it breaks down again eventually.
For my bitch, I do feel I have made the right choices.........
