An albino GSD is just like an albino person, pig, or anything
else: completely white or pink skin color, pink eyes and eye
rims, very sensitive to light, etc. I have not seen an albino GSD
in many, many years, but the ones I have seen were purebred
registered as "white".

I've never heard of or seen a albino GSD. And if an albino existed, how would
anyone know what color it was supposed to be? white? black/tan? black?
red? etc?

Where did the Albinos go? How did the whites of today get rid of the albino
gene? I have never seen an albino white GSD. I would be more inclined to
think the albino whites were NOT purebred GSDs but mixed with Husky or
something.

I remember when the DQ for white was put in the standard. Prior to
hat I saw a white place at the national in Dallas in 196?; Lloyd Brackett
as the judge. The reason given was that there was thought to be weakness
n many of the white dogs. This is still one of the reasons for the DQ for
hite dogs in other breeds. In some breeds white cannot surround the ears
ue to a connection to deafness The collie is one of these; even a white
ollie must have color on the head. In some white must not surround
he eye due to a connection to blindness. Cardigans are one example.
Even back then it was not felt that all whites had weaknesses, but as
hat was felt at the time to be a safeguard, all white GSDs were to be
Qd. Another reason for a white being undesirable is that the sheep do
ot respect a white dog.( since our
breed does so much more than heard, I don't buy it ) However, in the
erding group, there is only one breed that is allowed to be all white-
he puli. So it is still generally felt that white dogs are fine in the
working group as guardians, but not in the herding group. Also at the
ime many of the white GSDs were albino, and there are many weaknesses in
lbino mammals of any kind.
