A German judge told me the reason originally was they knew some white dogs were
white because they were dilutes. They knew breeding dilute to dilute would
result in recessive genes being expressed that may have serious problems such
as deafness, cleft palates, blindness and heart problems. He also said some
white dogs were simply white dogs, but at the time there was no way to tell
them apart. I would guess you could now with DNA testing. I apologize if this
has already been posted, to many posts to read them all. Sue T
