from the ofa site:
Chemical restraint (anesthesia) is not required by OFA but chemical
restraint to the point of muscle relaxation is recommended. With chemical
restraint optimum patient positioning is easier with minimal repeat
radiographs (less radiation exposure) and a truer representation of the hip
status is obtained.

my vet and ofa said the same thing that you get a truer representation of
the hip status and they said specifically that dogs that are tense can make
the femoral head fit tighter where it may not if sedated.

no more to say on it other than call ofa for clarification if it's that
important.

I think you have that statement reversed, since if a dog is not under
anestesia they are more likely to fight, and distort the xrayso multiple
xrays will be taken (per OFA), thus they may not pass when they would have
passed if they had been under and cooperative. But to me if I can avoid
anestesia, and still get a good result I will. (have 7 OFA Good through him,
and 2 Fairs so far).

And also, to clarify, the vet I use does put a dog under only when a dog
fights too much or will get abetter result from OFA, which I have only known
of him doing it once with a friend with their high drive working bitch.
Since he felt without anestesia she may or may not pass, so he put her
under, and got better films, and passed.

what they mean is the ones who pass w/o relaxation maybe should "not" have
passed.

I know OFA "says" that a dog may not pass unless they are under anestesia,
but I think it really may be the vet you use, and their skill in setting up
dogs. 10+ years ago, I went to my local vet who does OFA all the time, put
my girl Britta under anestesia, and hips looked like they would notpass.
Sent them to her breeder, and they told me to use their vet in PA, and with
NO anestesia, and positioning changes they looked like different hips, and
she passed. Always have used him since, and have had atleast 8 or 9 dogs
OFA without anestesia. Recently even took a bitch in full blown season,
since we had the appointment
and she came in early. Same vet told me OFA says not to xray during heat
but he's done several bitches now in season, and they passed. So we got her
xrayed, and she came back OFA Good.
