So, consulted the AKC "eligibility for classes" and found the following from
their current rules:

SECTION 6;
"The novice Class shall be for dogs six months of age and over, which have
not, prior to the date of closing of entries, won three
first prizes in the Novice Call, a first prize in Amateur-Owner-Handler,
Bred-by Exhibitor, American-bred, or Open Classes,
nor one or more points toward their championships".
Here's a something many may not realize. Take the National for example,
entries close on September 10. An owner enters their dog in
Novice at the National. Later, after entries for National are closed,
owner discovers there is another show scheduled for September 28 & ENTREIS
FOR THAT SHOW ARE NOT CLOSED ,so owner enters same dog in Novice at that
show. This time the dog not only
Wins the Novice class, the dog goes winners dog - 3 points. That same dog
now having a major win can still be shown in Novice at the
National in October BECAUSE THE ENTRIES FOR THE NATIONAL WERE CLOSED WHEN
THE DOG WAS ENTERED AND WON THE SHOW HELD
ON SEPTEMBER 20.
