I guess if you live long enough you see everything....

A little background...my very first ever show prospect, reserved early,
received at 9 weeks ended up w/ three missing teeth and a wry mouth.

That experience turned me into a bit (understatement!!!!) of a tooth
fairy...

I don't do an awful lot of breeding, so maybe I grow out a puppy every
other to third year. This year is different; I have a year old dog and an
almost six month old bitch here now....recent enough in proximity for the
order of teeth coming in with the first one was fresh in my mind.

"Normal" progression of a puppy losing baby teeth/second teeth coming in
seems to be incisors first then at about 4 months, there is a week or two
where their mouth seems to look like hamburger, you can usually see second
teeth erupting and for those you can't see, if you feel gently you can feel
the tooth below the gum line.

Naturally there have been times with different puppies over the years when
a baby tooth has come out early due to vigorous play and/or lots of marrow
bones and I might not be able to feel the second tooth for a week or so.
Usually though, if you open their little mouths wide, you can see/feel what
looks to be a "pea in a pod" look when looking directly down at the gum
line. If it is a top tooth, it helps to have the puppy lay on its back for a
belly rub...in fact, in bright sunlight you can sometimes see a lighter
area where the second tooth is below the gum line, so on their back in bright
sunlight is ideal...oh yes...tooth fairy here.

I have had a button come in twice as late as five months. (Lots of
praying!!!!) Oh yeah, lots of sitting rubbing their little gum willing the
tooth
to erupt.

BUT, in general, I can see/feel full detention at +/- 4 1/2 months w/ the
incisors first, pre-molars next, molars coming in shortly after at roughly
the same time as the canines.

I noticed something strange (for my experience anyway) w/ my young puppy
girl.

Her bottom canines didn't come out until 5 1/2 months and then it took
another week for me to feel then see the adult tooth coming in. Her gums were
swollen...just couldn't see/feel the tip of her second tooth for a week.
And isn't 5 1/2 months way late???????

Can I mention by the time one of mine gets to the ring they are bullet
proof about having their mouths looked at and that I am a bit of a tooth
fairy?????? In fact when mom was up recently, I was checking puppy teeth,
lots
of praise, mom did too, the we looked and 5 adult dogs were all lined up to
have teeth checked and get praised too...then get in line again...yeah...a
bit strange <G>. (Same thing happens with nail dremel-ing, ear cleaning,
having a young boy used to testicles being checked, the others line up for
a check and praise...even the neutered oldster...being dried off after
coming in from the rain, even when only some have been out lol...I
know...funny farm here.)

Back to teeth...well, thank God puppy girl has full detention and a lovely
bite...but this experience got me to thinking about the order of adult
teeth erupting and when I googled it, I did find several places that seem to
reflect my experiences prior to this puppy girl but I found some also say
the bottom canines come in last.

????????????????????????????????????????

Thoughts??????
