Jess -- Things do change, but as far as the GSDs and dog shows in general,
I'm an optimist. I predict that unless there's a nuclear holocaust or some
sort of Green Plague that kills us all off, people will still be going to
dog shows a hundred years from now.
GSD numbers at shows are obviously way lower than they once were, but I
think the overall quality is better than it has ever been. Even at small
major specialties there are typically a few very nice animals, and I don't
know that there were ever many more than that even in the good old days. In
fact, there were stretches when the quality got pretty thin, and there were
rampant problems, such as rears and temperaments.
I think the GSD conformation entry numbers have pretty much "bottomed out",
and will stay about the same for awhile. Eventually I think they will go up
just a bit. There are a many talented young GSD handlers right now, at least
as many as I remember at any given time. I also see some relatively younger
breeders who are putting out some nice ones. So overall, I think we're in
good shape.

The worst invention ever with regards to dog shows was AKC allowing for
every kennel club to have back to back shows... There used to be some great
weekends of shows that are no more because of the mentality. And do you
realize that on Memorial Day Weekend there are at least 50 sets of all-breed
shows around the country - that's WITHIN the U.S!
I could understand Fargo/Moorhead (MN/ND) having back to backs in the
boonies, but Waukesha (WI) where the shows usually do 2500 entries? No
way...
I think part of what we see isn't apathy, but burnout from shows and maybe
life in general.. Everyone is on the run all the time.... I think that also
spreads to the internet too, unfortunately for new people.
