Just because a dog goes to all-breed shows to finish his championship doesn't
mean he isn't a good one. Not all dogs who win at specialties are good dogs
either. I am amazed when I look through the Review at some of the dogs who have
won at specialties. I either think to myself "the quality must not have been
very good" or "What was this judge thinking" - I especially think this when I
have seen some of the suspect dogs in person.
Based on the Specialty thing - I would say it would probably be easier for a
new person to start out going to regular all-breed shows and showing his dog
there.
And, interesting that you make the comment about numbers of Dalmatians, etc.
There are actually, many, many more GSD litters in the US, bred by showbreeders
than there are Dalmatian litters. As with any other breed, the very special
ones are far and few between and like GSDs, the very special ones only get to
go to specialties...
I am failing to see the difference between the breeds in that regard. The
important part is getting newbies a good dog, with a good mentor into the sport
and quit the segregation between specialty dogs and all-breed dogs.
BTW: I also believe that a specialty dog should be able to win at all-breeds
and vice-versa....
