Ordinarily, I am too busy to read all the posts and respond, but
today, I am stuck.... 2 feet of snow, roads closed, job site shut down
and I am relegated to setting at home!!!! The dogs are having a ball
in the snow and the puppies are pretending they are big dogs.
Christina, we started showing with several other couples, many years
ago now. All of the others are no longer showing. There were several
reasons they quit:
1. Some did not believe in double handling - it annoyed them.
2. Some did not like professional handlers, and claimed that is why
other won.
3. Some did not think judges should also be exhibitors.
4. Some felt that the powerful, influential and rich always dominated
the game.
I did not know anyone - I was not socially connected. I am certainly
not rich, I was the worst double handler around, I handled myself (oh
Lord, you should see the videos), and, unlike my friends that started
at the same time, I did not think everything was "political." The
difference was, I won.
Now I am not sure how my friends perceived my winning. Possibly they
thought the judge was taking pity on a poor old man with two left
feet. Possibly they thought I was a favored professional handler
<BEG>.
I do remember our first reserve from the 6-9 puppy class. The judge
was laughing like crazy and when handing me the ribbon said, "I love
your dog but you need a lot of help!!!" When I exited the ring there
was a group of people consoling one another and I overheard, "Guess
who's sleeping with the judge?" "No, there's money being passed under
the table, that's for sure!" Etc., etc... I walked proudly away
knowing that I did not know the judge, couldn't even spell "BRIBBE"
and was simply lucky enough to have a good dog who did well that day.
Last year we finished two dogs in the US, three in Canada, had 2
Canadian Selects (one a select #3), a Can Futurity Victrix, BOF, and
on... I am looking at two new puppies that promise to keep us showing
for a while. My friends are still breeding on their dogs that did not
win and advertising them as being better than the dumb, ugly show
dogs.
I still contend that winning is the end result of an attitude, an
effort and a plan. There may be times when the judge is insecure and
goes with the handler. There may be times when friendships influence
the judgment in the ring. And, yes, we do use handlers now, as I grow
older, but now they ask to take our dogs - we do not have to beg. But
by and large, the rewards of life are not arbitrary, they are the end
result of the purposed attitude.
Now, I hope this darn snow melts off and the show season gets up and
running. I'm excited to get out there and have some more fun.
