Hi Christina,
There are many perceptions of what is fair or unfair at dogshows. For me,
fair means that the judge rewarded the dogs he thought were really closest to
his/her vision of the standard of the breed. Basically a matter of ethics.
The judge does what he/she thinks it is right. That is fair.
The problem arises with the perception of unfair because every judge has a
personal interpretation of the written words of the standard of the breed.
Two/three/four judges could judge a group of dogs and give them different
awards because each of them had a different vision of what that standard
says/means. Although in some cases, if may be called ignorance (or worse),
this is
not unfair.
Unfair is when a judge is not doing what he thinks it is right - when he
does not put up the dogs he thinks are the best because outside influences
impact his decision making (e.g., money, trading favors, friends, etc.). That
is
unethical and it is unfair.
As you grow up, you will find this issue of fair/unfair coming up in all
aspects of competition or group activities. You will see it in PTA groups,
BoyScouts, Little League, Garden Clubs, Soccer, etc. - it is just a part of
life.
Learn not to focus too much on the fair/unfair aspects of the activities
you like - just do it for the joy it gives you.
