The reason I said that about greys is because sometimes the grey is
uniform, with no shading (typical sable mask or hint of same, and
shading behind the withers running down behind the elbows)........ when
the individual hairs are banded with different colours, that is
agouti.........some people will call that sable...agouti is not a
recognized colour in the breed..........it becomes sable.
A Grey dog will have black pigment.........including his nose and
the pads of the feet (the pads may not be black at birth but very soon
thereafter) an otherwise grey dog without black pigment would be a blue
(speaking genetically, now, I believe).........Sables have black
pigment, too...no matter what shade of sable they are.
I think the original comments about grey being the only colour
that could improve pigment really meant a sable......either a wolf or
grey sable.......

A black overlay may not always be "tipped" hairs........the base colour
could be grey or a variation of red/brown...but there will be enough
black hairs throughout the coat to give it an "overlaid"
appearance............if the hairs are mixed together well enough, you'd
have a sable..........
