When the ground is frozen solid, it would take construction equipment to dig a hole deep enough to bury a dog. We have all manner of wildlife from simple coyotes to mountain lions and bears -- it wouldn't do for them to get a whiff of freshly buried dog. In the late spring and through the summer it's not a problem to make the grave deep enough. (Easy for me to say -- our animal cemetery is at Nancie's house and her husband Ray is the one who has to do the digging.)
