Yes they are. I remember a show where a young gal had put her bitch in both
12-18 and Am. Bred. Won 12-18, didn't win Am. Bred. The judge was from
Australia, so more than likely was relying on his steward, who called the
bitch
back for Winners. Karin Wagner had the Am Bred winner, I had the Open
winner. Karin politely told the steward the bitch was ineligible. The
steward
disagreed, there was confusion and I walked over from where I was "hiding",
naturally backed up what Karin was saying because the bitch was indeed
ineligible
to return for Winners having been defeated, the steward called a rep over to
verify, and the judging resumed without the bitch in question.
But it is indeed up to the competitors to know the rules, because these
things come up.
BTW, it is the responsibility of every show chair to have on hand the
pertinent rule books on the day of the show/event (in addition to evacuation
and
disaster plans, etc, etc.) I don't think anyone should be afraid to say "time
out, lets check."
ANG <G>, if you think breed can be tricky, some of the performance stuff can
really give you nightmares (especially since in herding, rally and agility
there are different organizations that run under slightly different rules,
throw in Canada and oh my!). If I'm competing I keep an UTD rule book in the
van.
