Well if you care about any specific Breed....in my opinion you should care
about the Breed Standard.
There does not always have to be a "perfect" reason for what it is........but
it IS the Breed Standard that
has kept this Breed one of the BEST in my opinion and I think it works.
Who knows why a Harlequin Great Dane has to have the spots in certain places
and not others or
why a Boxer has to have the white blaze where the white blaze is......and on
and on.
There is not any real "working with sheep" reason for the GSD to have upright
ears......but it is required in
the Breed Standard. None of the above have to do with function......but
they are a part of Breed Standards.
You cannot say that if we did not care about the color according to the
Standard we would have healthier
dogs and all breeders would be more concerned or ethical about their breeding
program.
One has nothing to do with the other.
If you consider the "white" GD breeder to be more ethical than "most
breeders"......that is a sad statement
for our Breed. Admittedly I do not personally know a "white" GSD breeder
but I do know an awful lot of good
and ethical breeders who breed AND show according to the GSD Standard.......the
same standard that does
DQ white GSD dogs.
NO Standard that I know of addresses Health Issues. THAT is up to the
individual conscience and concern of
a good and ethical Breeder.
We cannot change the Breed Standard for color DQ to correct that..........??
You can get a "white, black or 'poke a dotted"......<G> ......healthy dog of
any breed combination....<G>.....but you
need to be concerned about the Breed Standard to get a good representative of
any BREED you prefer.

Okay, so I'm glad someone brought the subject of healthy dogs up. I agree
totally as far as that goes. I don't care what color a GSD is or really where
they some from as long as they are sound, correct and healthy. I've only been
in the breed a short time, but from my observations there is more concern over
who's popular than who is the best dog. Who cares what color really? I think
someone else mentioned the sheep don't care. Remember form follows function, or
is that as good as a fairy tale. When our dogs are dying so young these days,
isn't color rather a low priority? My dogs' sire died very young. You think I
can find out the real reason he died? I haven't yet. What good does that do the
breed? The one and only white GSD breeder I know is more conciencous of health
than most breeders I know, regardless the breed. She was floored when I told
her I couldn't find out why my dogs' sire died. How am I supposed to know if
it's genetic and if I should
watch for things in my own dogs? For that matter, know what to avoid when
pairing a bitch with my male?
Just my two cents, for whatever that it worth. Sorry for the long vent.
