Evan's posts are always an interesting read. Maybe not quite factual, but
nonetheless, interesting. I was on the BOD when the Standard issue first
came up (2000-2001). I remember some of this differently, but that's ok.
However, I must correct the statement regarding our new
champion, "Ellie", Ch Osor-Sense and Sensibility. Ellie arrived here on
April 4th, having never been shown before. Her very first show was April 22
(?) and she finished on June 24th at the largest specialty (to date) in the
western US, under Christi Halliday, going BOB from the classes among 7
beautiful Champions.
Ellie was undefeated in the classes.
Ellie was "imported" (LOL) from the state of Washington from her breeder,
Carlos Osorio. Her pedigree includes most of the great AKC Champions from

I don't really think times are changing, a good dog is a good dog no matter
where it was born. Our Ch Kappo von Eisenwerk, (Italian) finished in 2013
winning in both specialty and all-breed rings.

As I understand it the SV is the German registry, and is recognized
throughout the world. When the GSDCA was formed in New York, the SV allowed
only one other country organization to be a member, who would have a vote
in the SV. I never did find out what the vote meant. It is interesting
that when I went on the board the President asked me to check the corporate
standing of the club. I had a hard time finding it, and determined we had
dropped "German" from the name, and I arranged to have it put back on our
club's corporation standing.
After World War II a lot of the German breeders wanted to protect the
breed and sent some great dogs to America. Hitler had taken over the SV,
and wanted to breed dogs for his army.
Lately I have seen dogs sent here, sold for thousands of dollars, that I
would not even show. It appears there are some who will buy anything that
comes from Germany without knowing what they are getting. Often the
temperament is not what is desired of our dogs in America.
A number of American breeders try to breed outside the AKC lines, and find
themselves in a blind alley, with a limited breeding program. Some like
Helen Gleason have been able to combine the lines with success. But, she
knows what she is looking at, and works in other venues than just
conformation.
Then Schutzhund USA was formed, and was also given a vote in the SV. This
went against the SV charter, but for some reason two organizations from the
United States were given a seat at the table. Our treasurer at one time
crashed into the treasury of Schutzhund USA and told the board that they
were not as wealthy as they claimed. That was a danger to the GSDCA, (a
crime by a board member), and the board worked to protect the club. I was
asked the legal problems of doing that, and researched the computer laws,
and advised the GSDCA what to do.
A number of members of the GSDCA have promoted our continued membership in
the SV. We, the GSDCA formed the WDA because the AKC would not allow
schutzhund work, so we formed what was to be a separate organization. At
the time I advised the GSDCA to be careful to keep it separate, and not to
have the same board, etc. Now the AKC has decided to allow bite work, so
there is no need for the WDA.
When Dan Smith was president we were sent a letter telling the GSDCA that
unless we dropped our standard and used the standard of the SV, we no
longer could call our dogs German shepherds. Dan said we might have to do
that, at which time the board, (I was on it at the time), almost lynched
him. My response was we would just start calling them Schufferhunds. I
was using sarcasm, but the response was "hell no". I think it died down.
Some of the club members took credit for getting the SV to back off, but I
never knew the full story.
The the WDA sued the GSDCA over some contract issues, and so we started to
host the World Trials, which caused a great loss, and the law suit was over
bills from that event. I have heard it was settled, but I have not gotten
the full story on that either.
Today, I have no idea what is going on as it relates to the SV. I don't
show in Europe, and have no intent to breed out side the AKC lines. I know
there has been revisionist history on this subject, and I am sure there are
those who see things differently. This is just my opinion after being
involved with the club for over 40 years. I have been asked legal advise
on a number of events, and have done the best I can to protect the club and
the members. Some times I am ignored, which often is a wise move.
But, others might not agree with me. I just saw a pretty bitch finish
owned by the Tanks, that was not AKC lines, so maybe times are changing.
