Possibly because GSD owners are becoming known for insisting on the Mycoplasma tests. Both my repro vet and my regular vets consider the mycoplasma tests extremely unreliable - they are testing for something that is often present in the outer canal. To be acurate, the swab must be taken from deeper - during which process, bad bacteria that normally is kept out of that area can be pushed into it by the swab. False positives are common and since those result in the bitch being treated for something that wasn't really a problem anyway (with the added expense of the test - $125.00 + vet charges), all the vets I spoke to said if the owner of the stud dog won't breed without it, to just put the bitch on the antibiotics. My main vet told me he would prescribe Baytril if I asked for it, because he knows I understand the risks. He also showed me numerous posts from some vet email lists he belongs to from vets with GSD owning clients who don't want to lose good customers, but were very concerned about both the tests and the Baytril. Interesting that none of the emails he showed me concerned any other breeds. I'd also ask her how many kids she has in College or about to start College.... I'm not a vet, but antibiotics shouldn't be handed out like dog treats. If the beneficial Bacteria are killed off, you could end up with a Miss on the Breeding, or worse, it might set the stage for a major Infection, such as pyo.
