Other Vets charge up to a hundred dollars or more. 20 years or so ago you could buy a HUGE bottle for ten bucks. And it was legal to buy. Not now. I had a Cat breeder friend who used to buy it for suffering kittens. DON'T shoot the messenger. Most Vets are ALWAYS after the all mighty dollar. Cathleen Bennett & Joe Guay In the middle of a four day show weekend 2 weeks ago when I was exhausted from leaving the house at 5AM 3 days in a row, my phone rang after 10 PM and I recognized my house call vet's cell. (I have multiple vets. Over the years, I've gravitated towards specialists.) I picked it up and all she wanted was "company" for a drive she was making. You see, she had just handled an at home euthanasia for someone I had recommended her to, not even her client, (and they won't be, they live too far away), and it was a long tearful evening before the family was ready to let go. When she called me, she was about an hour away from the crematorium, then it would be another hour and a half before she got home. With any luck it would be just before midnight. She has 2 smallish children, so that left her husband to feed and tuck them in. It was a sad call, the hours of tearful owners and a dog who couldn't be helped had taken their toll on my vet, so we changed the subject and spoke of mundane things. I really don't know or care what she charged them and knowing the owners, I'm sure they added something in no matter what she'd asked for. This same vet BTW treated an old lady's diabetic cat for over a year for free. Turns out she was the lady's only visitor. So, I'm sorry your experience with vets leads you to think (quoting) above, "Most Vets are ALWAYS after the all mighty dollar." Thankfully, that's never been my experience. BTW, this gal is a pharmaceutical whiz. We discussed a case she was treating for pano (Golden) and I mentioned Albon, and it turns out Albon has anti-inflammatory properties. (!!!!) She is getting a toy breed puppy, and that turned the conversation to bitches having difficulty conceiving which led to some choice comments for baytril "just because" before breeding. I've avoided it because I never liked the "just because" aspect, but more importantly it seems it stays in a bitch's system for 21 days. (What do you know?) She and her friends from various practices are seeing more immune disorders, really weird stuff across the board (pure bred and mixed), so we discussed antibiotics and hormones in the food supply and other environmental factors wondering if the animals were the "canary in the coal mine". OK, so it wasn't an upbeat conversation, but considering what she'd just been through....
