I drive anywhere from 45 minutes to 2+ hours three states away depending on what I'm treating or testing. I think in all these years between the dogs and horses, I've only fired one vet. It's just like anything else IMO. I interview, ask for references, communicate and engage. I wouldn't keep a plumber, landscaper or electrician I didn't like either <G>. Got you beat on that one Kathy. For any non emergent treatment I still go to my vet in Canada.....23 1/2 hour drive. Their farthest away client used to be a RCMP officer who had a dog from me that brought him down once a year from the Northwest Territories for a checkup, but he passed last year so I guess I win the prize now. This vet gave me their personal cell number that I can call 24/7 with a problem...a great help in the middle of the night when you don't want to chance a student vet at an emergency clinic. When I interviewed vets down here, I talked to 17 of them locally. If you can imagine, one admitted to never having done a spay.....has a practice based on parasite testing and giving shots....the light stuff. Admitted he would not have time to do any surgery in his practice. One of the questions I asked most was how many bloats they had seen in their practice and how did they react to them.......I had 2 vets ask me what bloat was. Scary. The homeopathic fellow took over a practice with an older vet locally that John had used years ago, and I thought I would try him. He had some good answers. He admits to not knowing everything with our breed, but when he does not know something or cannot answer questions, he makes a point to find out. He has no qualms to call a specialist to get advice. Almost lost a dog with erlychia...he could not figure out what was wrong. He finally sent all the blood work and clinical signs to an internist friend and got the answers. He tries real hard......... He is also VERY cheap...he believes in not pricing himself over the limit people will not seek care for their pet. Workable guy. For BIGGY emergencies, there is a great clinic in Houston I will go to......most the repo stuff and pup checks go there. They have superb reputation....and high pay scale. You have to "shop" for vets...there are good ones out there. Obviously, Kathy has done the same. The ones that won't answer your questions I don't waste my time on. For those wanting to look further, call a vet and leave a message with your number and a good time to contact the vet you wish to speak to. A couple I wanted to chat with, I arranged to drop in their clinic at the end of the day and promised to take only a few minutes of their time. A few clinics I dropped in, I did not need to ask any questions...was enough for me. So those who are dissatisfied, make it a project and look around.
