If you have one of the recalled models, it is going to take weeks to get
appointments for repairs. I can't even get my truck in for 3 weeks and my
daughter sells Toyotas. So, what to do in the meantime?
It is not an option for many folks to stop driving their vehicles. What is
practical is to know what to do if you have an acceleration or braking issue.
In either case, DO NOT TURN THE CAR OFF!!!!! I cannot say this enough. If you
turn off the ignition, you will lose ALL control of the vehicle.
Acceleration: Put the vehicle in neutral and apply brakes. If the vehicle
does not slow down, engage the emergency brake.
Brakes: If your brakes don't work properly, downshift or put into neutral.
Again, you can apply the emergency brake.
Both these options will slow your vehicle and allow you control. If you end up
in reverse or kill your tranny or brakes, who cares. Get the vehicle to stop
and let Toyota deal with it.
The rumors of a software or computer problem is totally true. Most of the
dealers have suspected this for months. I hope that Steve Woszniak (Apple
co-founder) will be heard by Toyota as I bet he could come up with a solution.
His Prius is having braking issues.
Anyway, drive safely, get an appointment and if you have any occurrence, call
the dealer immediately and get your appointment MOVED UP.
