The AKC is a business. If it has a way to make more money, it does so.
Calling it a pimp is unfair to pimps everywhere.
When dog showing began, it was only for the wealthy. Those shows were held
in areas where only those with a great deal of money could afford to go and
show. Then it evolved to where we "little people" could get involved.
Slowly it got more expensive and some were required to give it up.
It used to take all day for a Specialty show, not we have two in one day.
Things change, and either we can sit back and complain, quit and say how
terrible they are, fade away and find another way to amuse ourselves, or
change with it, and figure out what it takes.
What does remain is the quality of our breed as Ed says. We keep trying
to find ways to improve the breed, and in doing so, do no harm it. We have
a stronger dog, a healthier dog, a better breed today, then when the German
shepherd began.
So, it is now up to each of us to decide what to do with the changing
times. What I don't agree with is trying to change others to do what we want.
I just found out we can't fly our adult dogs into St. Louis. I tried to
cancel my flight, (and not go), but they won't refund my money, so I told
them I would leave an empty seat on the plane if I make that decision. And,
never fly that airline again.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
