I will be part of the pity party again. This time, not only because I am not
at the National watching my favorite breed, but because I'm watching my 14 3/4
year old, best bud's progressive spinal deterioration and trying to decide if
it's time. On her good days, she greets me at the door with her ball in her
mouth, and will fetch the rolled ball a few feet a couple of times before
getting tired. On her bad days she can't get up from a down. On those bad
days, I reach for the phone but then she rallies and gives me a look that dares
me make that last appointment with the vet. It's clear she is confused about
why she can't do all the athletic things she has always done her whole life,
but she hasn't given up yet. The heart of the German Shepherd.
She's had a dead tail for a while because of this problem. Tonight I noticed
that she actually has developed a hole in her tail, about three inches below
where it connects to the back. It is oozing blood. It wasn't there a few days
ago when I groomed her. I have treated it and will take her to the vet first
thing tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced something
like this with their senior dog?
Maybe I'll see youse guys (had to slip in the NewYawkism) next year....

I'm going to miss the National this year due to some family issues, but I
really wish I was going to be there. So, I'd like to wish everyone the best
of luck. In my book every competitor deserves a ribbon for entering and
competing, regardless of the venue.
I'd also like to wish that every person gets to Colorado safe and sound,
that every dog arrives in good condition without delay, that not a single
dog starts to shed the minute it arrives or goes into heat Tuesday morning.
I wish everyone good digestion and every dog a firm bowel movements. I wish
that every dog that gets carsick suddenly decides that it loves riding in a
car.
I wish that everyone has the opportunity to see their friends and enjoy at
least one good laugh -- a laugh that makes you cry and hope you're not going
to wet your pants. I wish that everyone has the opportunity to say hello to
one person you're always dreamed of meeting -- and pet their dog. I wish
that everyone has the opportunity to meet the person you've become friends
with on the List and not be disappointed. I wish that every person has the
opportunity to make a new friend that you'll be communicating with next
year. I wish that everyone has at least one great meal and the Victory
dinner is edible. I wish that everyone has the opportunity to smell puppy
breath.
I wish that every new officer and board member is overwhelmed with
congratulatons. I wish every loser congratulates the winners. I wish that
every handler makes it through every class without falling down. I wish that
everyone finds at least one special doggie toy and buys one t-shirt that
will remind them of a great National. I wish I could join you.
