Sally, All good information IMO! I do believe that the majority of us all want what is right for the breed and work hard studying the lines (with what information may be available to us), etc in order to make the best 'informed' choices in our breeding programs. Health, temperament and longevity weigh high on my important list in choosing a mate. However, without proper and in-depth knowledge of the individuals within said pedigree, it is all a crap shoot! I too understand how difficult it can be to make the decision to eliminate a good bitch/stud from your program because of a few issues. Yes, it does take two to tango and sometimes it is just that one pair up that produced problems. Hard decision's need to made by responsible and caring people and only they (us) can change the outcome by the process of eliminating and supplying proper and truthful info. Good discussion. I truly believe in survival of the fittest. When I was new at this I tried to justify using animals for breeding that had some problems(health) but that only led to heart break for everyone involved. I got tough and said no more. Any animal with health problems did not get bred.- Once I did that the problems disappeared for the most part The other thing I believe in is these are dogs they should be treated like dogs. My dogs are fed twice a day a good quality dog food with a little water and a spoon of meat. They are not confined before or after eating they are not given supplements- They live out side without heat or air conditioning and they are big strong healthy and live a long time- I let them stand on their own 4 feet. Of course I give medical care when needed. My girl with the allergies has been spayed. My heart breaks as she was one of the last daughters out of my Seiko but I would not chance her producing more allergies. Sometimes people just have to say enough is enough and turn around and go a different direction Sally www.embroiderybysally.org Saturday, January 17th Mike wrote: First M is for Mike ;-) Next, I think you have every right, and quite frankly the responsibility to speak up about issues affecting "Your" dogs. Maybe the Redbook is best for anonimity, but I dont' think we get enough responses there to be helpful Sheila and I have always been open about issues affecting our dogs, how else can you make informed decisions. We've had two mesenteric torsions and one gastrol enterits, and have also had two die with no answer from autopsy's other then GI issues were ruled out in those cases. In thirty years, I don't think thats a bad record. Continuing to educate ourselves tho, is paramount to the future of the breed. Now, I'm not one to over-react to this information, I simply want to have the whole picture. I'm still learning about those folks who would prefer to bury this side of our breed or their heads in the sand, it is very unfortunate that that is the path they have chosen. In coaching new or inexperienced breeders, one of our recommendations is to not run to the latest and greatest "young" flavor of the month. Please look at the 8-10 year old males that have a track record and progeny that 5-8 years old for review. This has been a result of our McDonalds fast food mentality And I also feel we do have to be somewhat pragmatic, lets face it there is a reason canines have more then one puppy - nature expects there to be loss. The tough part is the emotional side of the loss affects us as humans and our inability to "Fix it". There will always be something that affects our great breed, we must meet them head on and with as much information as possible.
