Her observations were intereseting. She was appalled at the "crippled" dogs
she saw at the Specialty. She could not believe the dogs walking on their
hocks and the flapping/paddling front feet. > Laura Thomas

Laura, we have a friend who raises Irish Wolf Hounds, judges her own breed, plus several others and was wanting to expand into GSD's, so we invited her to a show and tried to explain what she was seeing to her. That is precisely my perspective - The GSD has to be explained, because it is unlike any other breed.
* It stands different
* It moves different
* It has the greatest range of motion, both front & rear of any breed.
* It may move more like a cat than any other breed.

At the show our friend was going on about how we have ruined the breed, made them cripples, "see, they walk on their hocks", etc., etc.. the same old lines. So, we started with the simple analogy of the pendulum swing, asking which stroke will propel the dog further, a short, broken stride of one that gets up under in the rear and opens well behind the dog without kicking up. After much explanation and observation, she saw what I was saying. Then we took her out on the show grounds and handed her our girl, rather extreme - told him to stay and walked away 100 ft. or so and then called her. He jerked her off her feet, broke the swivel, and came to me. She was then a believer.....

When you see the proper powerful movement of the GSD and understand what it is, it is a beautiful thing. When you see it as a critic, your reality is warped into seeing something so different that it can only be described as crippled. It is not really what you see, but the frame of reference through which you see it. Reality is interpretive! Unfortunately!!! Appreciation of the proper GSD movement is an acquired education.

No, I am not justifying lift in front, moving from the elbow in front, locked hocks in the rear, etc.... I do not like that either. But the general picture of the GSD is largely misunderstood by the novice, the untrained, the import enthusiast and sometimes the judge. <G>
