If you look to the wild most females of any species are colored to blend in and not be conspicuous whereas the male of the species are usually more vibrant in their coloration as they do not typically stay with the young. Genetics also plays a role in coloration as we all strive for the rich pigmentation, but sometimes you just can't fool mother nature. Just my thoughts on the subject.
