Can't we just follow the REQUIREMENTS of the Award and let it go at that?
ALL SAR dogs are trained to find people...and many German Shepherds do it on a
regular
basis. They are HAPPIEST when they make a live find as in this case. It IS
what they are
trained to do!! The trainers also deserve recognition for the many many hours
they put in for
this extensive training and hard work on a search. There is no way we can
award every
dog or German Shepherd Dog that does exactly what it is TRAINED TO DO, nor the
trainers
that have worked so hard and long to get them to that point, and work in the
search also.
This is not about Tina's web site or what we think.....or even the joy of a
found boy or how the
dog feels........and it certainly is not politics.
Helen has posted the requirements and rules clearly. There are many actual
HERO dogs that
are acting on pure intelligence, instinct, GSD reasoning, and love of owners
with no training that
clearly deserve an award and recognition as Heroes also

If you feel this strongly in this case, you might consider making a proposal
that we change the
rules / requirements for the GSDCA, Inc. Hero Award to other Breeds and
TRAINED dogs and
submit that proposal requesting this change? I think the requirements are
great as they are....

Years ago a dog that we bred found Anna Conrad in the Alpine Avalanche. They
instantly KNEW
it was a live find before they started digging....because the dog was
abnormally excited!! ANNIE
was well trained and very excited to succeed after years of training. Her
owner / trainer had
worked long and hard in the snow working & training her. A triumphant moment
for both of them!!!
Rather than taking it to a National level as a Hero dog....our Local Club
honored the dog and
invited the press. Perhaps a Local Club can do the same in this case.
Again.....it is in the training.
( P.S....this was the first "live find" in North America after days of being
buried in snow. )

Shelpherds

  Cheryl,

Is Tina Barber the breeder of this particular dog. Do you know for a fact
the handler of Gandalf feels the
same way about GSD's as Tina? Do you personally know his handler? I have
met Shiloh owners, even in competition, who have no issue with us GSD people or
our dogs. We even set up next to each other at
shows. Don't particularly care for the temperament of some of these dogs,
but the people are ok.
Can't say the same for some other herding type breed people.

I have been to Tina's website. I have also been to some GSD websites that
spew the same crap. So,
if the owner of a pup from a breeder on one of THOSE GSD websites, who hates
the GSDCA, has a
dog who qualifies as a Hero Dog, do we deny that dog because of the beliefs
of the breeder? Puleeeze!!!!
Sending a letter of recognition, in no way takes anything away from our
Breed. In fact, maybe it sends the message that we are not the elitist snobs
people think we are. Because we can recognize the good deeds
of another breed, even one that doesn't agree with our standards.

And, I bring up the same question, if your child/husband/parent was
missing/lost, are you going to say no to
the SAR dog just because you don't agree with that Breed's origin or
politics? I sure hope not. I, personally
have a real issue with hybrid dogs, like Labradoodles. But, if one came to
find my missing loved one, you
can bet I would not doubt this dog. And, I would tell you and everyone else
about the results. And, I would do anything to honor the dog that found
him/her.

Having an open mind about this is not a bad thing. Can't change people's
beliefs but hope you think about what you would do in a similar, real life
situation.

  Respectfully,

  Laura Thomas

You all still dont understand. Tina Barber is the "breed warden" for the
Shiloh shepherds.
She is the "dictator for the whole breed.
SHE HATES US. SHE HATES THE GSDCA. SHE HATES THE AMERICAN GSD.
why dont you check out her website???
check this out and you will see what I am talking about.

And many/most of her people feel the same.

I AM CERTAINLY ON YOUR SIDE SALLY. Good grief--give the dog a special award

and give the GSD the HERO award. How hard is this--OK--now it is not in the
R and R. Can't we just do something nice off the cuff once? Sandi
