Good point Mary. We do run, walk and swim, that way the dogs work different
muscles. I would not want to restrict my dogs movement by muscle build up.
Right now the walking and running is done WAY early in the morning, and
the swimming any time we can.
After talking to many folks who swim their dogs, they certainly don't
recommend swimming as the only form of exercise, with the main complain being
the dogs fronts can be shorten up by muscle build up.

It is really good to do both. Swimming tones different muscles that
running. Being low impact, it helps the dog learn HOW to move their
legs properly. I have had puppies at time that just could not seem
to get it together on the ground, but learned their footing in the
pool. Also, it is a great way for a dog with Pano to exercise
without impact and pain.
Running put a firmer finish on the dog. In this heat, run a little,
swim a lot!
