I agree with using puppy food, but I use it on all my show dogs, or dogs that
need to gain weight, and pregnant bitches all the way through.

The most I have ever used in protein is 28%. 30 is cat food and I have
always heard it is too rich. But how big a difference can 2% really make?

The best gage is your Amber. Does she like it? Is her weight good for her
age and time of her cycle? Puppies do need more to grow, to be sure, but I
have always used between 26 and 28% protein for all but my nuetered dogs. They
get the 21% or lower if I can find it.

I am currently using Nurto's Natual Choice. Liddy, due end of Feb is on the
large breed puppy lamb and rice, along with Kit, who needs to gain a good deal
still. This food was selected because it meets the allergy requirements they
both have.
Dexter is on the same brand adult formula with chicken and rice, he seems to
be allergic to lamb, but the other two are allergic to chicken.

  I love dogs!!!!!!! sheila

Hi: I feed my "Amber" Nutro Natural Chicken, Rice, Oatmeal with her
giblets, chicken livers and hearts. This dry food has a protein level
of 21%. The Puppy formula I believe is 26%. They also make a holistic
brand which contains chicken, lamb and salmon called Ultra. I was
thinking of trying that one, but it lists it's protein level at 30%.
Isn't this very high for our GSD's? Amber will be bred in about another
week for her first time. Some breeders told me they switch their
bitches to a puppy grain during the last few weeks of their pregnancy
because of the higher protein. What are your feelings about this? Is
anyone using the Ultra formula with the 30% protein? What do you think
the highest protein level should be to feed our adults normally (and
then when they're bred) and the highest protein level to feed puppies?
Thanks, Barbara
