Since the word "feed mill" (okay, two words!) was mentioned,
Made by www.pminutrition.com : a brand called Exclusive. It is only available
at feed mills who sell Purina products. It is much cheaper than like TOTW and
even cheaper than much/most the junk "high end" commercial foods available at
chain stores.
Fresh never frozen chicken (or lamb) meat #1 ingredient than chicken/lamb meal
is #2 and barley is #3. They also use oats and brown rice as grains. No wheat
no soy, and I know the high calorie has corn gluten meal as a quick energy
source and calories, being a 30/20 food I can see the addition I suppose- the
other chicken formulas don't have corn and at least the corn portion that is in
it is not near the top of the list. No artificial preservatives. Has balanced
omega fatty acids too. Comes in large breed & regular plus puppy formulas in
each as well as a reduced fat and a senior; which incidentally, has a GSD on
it- I put my 9 year old girl on it recently and am really pleased with it- I
had been blending the LB adult & low fat together to keep her belly full and
her waistline slim... Plus it has the added glucosamine etc (as well as the
large breed formulas) that many older dogs need to have as a part of their diet
(every little bit helps them I know) and chicory and probiotics, all in a
thinner easy to chew kibble for older tired teeth.
While I've never been one to rave about any kibble after having fed raw/home
cook for years, I've nothing to say but good things about this food! My BFF
found it at her local feed mill on the shelf a few years ago (well it must be
like 5 years ago now??) when that melamine showed up in all kinds of dog
foods-- Exclusive was never recalled not once during that whole period having
their own plant and not being owned by P&G like so many others...
When I decided to go off homecook n raw almost 3 years ago now (needed
convenience again with my big move & all else), I thought we'd give it a whirl.
It will be 3 years in November and I'm still feeding kibble as the primary part
of my dogs' diet! No other food has made it so long- my Gammo has fed ProPlan
forever & a week, but I wasn't happy with it past the 1st big bag... I fed
Iams/Eukanuba for a few years and Nutro Natural (didn't like that so much) and
even did TOTW for a bit and Solid Gold for a very long time... Both my dogs
and I like the Exclusive better than any of them! I'm still amazed that I get
35# of kibble for under $40 out the door for a kibble I don't feel all that bad
about feeding. Even the finicky eaters I have had for boarding will eat the
Exclusive. Makes my job easier when I'm long-term boarding/conditioning a high
drive high energy finicky eating small appetite GSD bitch! She's actually
gained 5 pounds in the last 6 weeks while getting 20x the exercise- gone from
being a couch potato in a subdivision with no fenced yard to having a 40 acre
parcel where it's a mile walk to the road just to get the mail and she has
freedom of her part of the house as well as a small outdoor yard if she isn't
out loose with me. Now that I found amazing as her owners have tried this n
that to try to put weight on her- she's high energy and a slow maturer (and 3.5
years old presently)... But I don't imagine it's all dumb luck and coincidence
(since my other long boarder has put needed weight on since coming to me last
December!)
Anyhow clip all my fluff out and read: if you're looking for a new kibble
that's "decent" for kibble (an "A" report card food) for your dog give
Exclusive a try. I highly recommend it!
