We too have had first hand experience with RMSF and Ehrlichia Equi and also
Ehrilichiosis with 3 different dogs last year. The first one we noticed
sypmtoms with was a younger dog (12 months) old... It can be very
devestating. The first vet who saw the first dog swore he must of been
poisoned and gave him vitmain K and I kept insisting for a tick titer to be
done. She ran all the blood work and organ functions (no tick test yet) ..
all was coming back normal except RBC which was a little low.. she finally
after a few hours consulted a specialist who said test for Tick borne
illnesses ASAP which is what we wanted in the first place. Next the 2 other
dogs were experiencing similar syptoms.. One of them was our Sel Ch Axel
who's first symptom was lameness.. and then Ch. Reggie who had joint
swelling. It progressed to loss of appitie and vomiting along with diarrhea
in one of the dogs. All were put on Doxi right away.. 2 of them pred for the
swelling. Despite aggressive tx we lost the youngest dog. The other 2 are
doing well now.. Axel's lameness comes and goes.. The older dogs did respond
well to their tx.... They were on Doxi 2 different times.. 6 and 8 weeks
each time. To this day we have never seen one tick on the dogs or in the
yard. We keep everything cut down and always have. At the time they started
displaying symtoms we were using K9 Advantix. We have switched to Frontline
but also spray Bronco around the kennels and on the dogs before they run out
back. It definitly is an eye opening experience. Two dogs were chronic (the
young dog, Malcolm) and Axel.
If you suspect a tick borne illness.. insist and don't let up until it is
done..
