This is a very bad medical condition that is very hard to treat, but has been successful with some therapies. My Father's German Shepherd dog of only 6 years of age had this, and died because of it. He was a beautiful picture of health, went to the Vet for his annual physical and shots and shortly after that, this 95 pound healthy dog became sick with the perianal fistulas. Because this dog was so healthy prior to his annual vaccinations, his Vet said that the shots could have broken down his immune system and caused the perianal fistulas, but there is no test to accurately diagnose the cause, only the disease. This 6 year old dog with the pf was treated daily, with large doses of steroids, antibiotics, and changed his diet to fish and chips, per the Vet, to try and change the way his immune system was responding negatively, and maintained daily hygiene of the anal area. The prednisone helped with the severe pain the perianal fistulas was causing, and the inflammation of the anal abscesses, but prolong use of steroids will break down a immune system and bones, as well as cause all kinds of other medical problems. We were given two choices, the steroids, and antibiotics with the change of diet, or chemotherapy. It was my Father's dog and he choose the lessor of the two treatments, and even though it was the less aggressive of the two, the Vet bills were very costly. I know that one cannot put a price on our dog's value, some of us would use our last dime to try and help our dog, I am only providing you with information regarding the treatment of this medical condition. Cyclosporine used in the earliest stage of the disease is known for some positive results. Treatment of perianal fistulas is very frustrating, consisting of administration of antibiotics and local hygiene daily. Surgical treatment may include chemical cauterization, cryosurgery, laser surgery, deep excision, deroofing and fulguration, or tail amputation. This is a paragraph from a article provided to me from the treating Vet, called: Randomized controlled trial of cyclosporine for treatment of perianal fistulas in dogs, by: Karol A. Mathews, DVM, DVSc, and Hanif R. Sukhiani, DVM, DVSc. Paula, here is a link that you can provide for your Friend to read and research the information provided for Perianal Fistulas. I wish your Friend and her Dog the Best of Luck. _http://www.vetinfo.com/doganal.html_ (http://www.vetinfo.com/doganal.html) Francine D.
