If they are determined to do a breeding they will.. and confronting them in this manner will not only alienate, but cause some very hard feelings amongst neighbors as well.. I would take the "reverse psychology" tact.. Go over and say "My daughter told me you were going to do some breeding. Anything I can help with?" (Since you have done this before..) then go into the HORROR stories of whelping, not being able to sell the pups, and when you do sell them there is always that risk of people beating down your door demanding there money back and your hide if the pup they buy from you has health issue, the loss of puppies, perhaps the mother and worst of all , the expenses you incur.. but do it from the perspective that "**I** must be nuts to want to put myself through all that cost, anguish and WORK!" You could even throw in a "Gee, now that I have told you all the bad stuff that I have experienced, I think I'm going to stop breeding.. who needs it???" ALWAYS offer information from the perspective that you look like you are supporting them, but sharing your own disasters.. If you haven't had any, make some up.. <grin> You say they want to have puppies to replace "Rusty" when he dies.. talk to them about his status.. how bad are his hips? Make suggestions as to how they can keep him healthy and happy - and when the time comes that they want to replace him, tell them how they can AVOID having to go through that anguish and upset the next time.. In the end, they will do what they chose, but if you *act* like you are supporting them, you should be able to get them to listen.. if not, you have done what you could. JMHO.. On the surface that seems a great idea, but did you know that bad hips are inherited? Did you know that temperament is partly inherited? Did you know that there are thousands of dogs waiting for homes in shelters and foster homes? Did you know that for every litter of show dogs, more than 1/2 are pets? And did you know that like our children, breeders of show dogs take responsibility for the dogs they produce for the entire life of the dog? > > Are you willing to produce dogs that are in constant pain their entire lives? Are you willing to keep the entire litter if no homes are found? > > My average cost for producing a litter of 7 is about $2,000, between seeking a quality dog and bitch to breed, the prenatal expenses, and the vet bills, raising puppies to the legal selling age of 8 weeks without the extra month for social growth costs me about one thousand dollars. > > Please rethink your plan to breed your dog. He is not an AKC registered dog, and he is not healthy. While I do breed German Shepherd's I also take full responsibility for what I produce. I breed with great care for health and temperament. These dogs grow to be as much as 120 lbs, this is not a toy, it is a life and one capable of taking another life without proper training and care." > > The truth is there is no nice way to say what needs to be said. Site all local laws that could restrict this person's activity, gather local statistics from your shelter. And stress the health and temperament issues. > > You are not likely to change their minds, but you do have an obligation to try. Nice as we try to be about this issue, we are breeding and are seen as being the same as your backyard neighbor from their point of view. Show them your champions, show them the temperament of your dogs, show them how dangerous his dog is. Expect to see their puppies in a few months anyway. > > Please do not turn a blind eye to what is going on so close to you, the dogs produced will likely honor the bad reputation of our breed wherever it exists still. > Sheila > ricknaudra@xxxxxxx wrote: > My neighbor the backyard breeder > > I have a neighbor that lives a block down the road that has 3 unregistered GSD’s. My youngest daughter knows the kids that live there and she told me that they are going to breed ‘Rusty’(Their passive/aggressive male) for a second time because he has bad hips and they want to get some puppies out of him before he dies . I’ve been trying to find a way to (tactfully) approach them. I want to be able to try and explain that I understand what they are trying to accomplish but that it’s really not the best idea. So I thought I’ d ask my extended family…Da list. > > Keep in mind I have never me these people. > > Should I talk to them and explain that it would be better for them to not breed to Rusty and take their love for shepherds to the next level or just back off and mind my own business. > > Any suggestions or comments welcome. > > Thank you, > Rick Haase > > > ============================================================================ > POST is Copyrighted 2006.
