In 1998, when he was 8 years old, JR (Amherst's Lake Dallas) was one of the
lucky few to survive emergency surgery for mesenteric torsion. If I recall, in
addition to antibiotics and something for the motility of his intestines, the
vet had me give him something like canned I/D for a week or two. He was then
slowly weaned back onto a normal diet with no further problems.
In 1999, 14 months after the mesenteric torsion surgery, he had stomach bloat
w/torsion. Emergency surgery saved his life. Again a diet of canned I/D for a
few days and then he was weaned back onto his normal food.
He went on to celebrate his 13th birthday in February 2003. He went to the
Bridge due to complications of Cauda Equina in May 2003.

A friend of mine has a dog recovering from surgery for mesenteric torsion. I
don't know anyone who has had a dog live from this and was wondering if any of
you guys have. My friend is taking her dog home from the hospital tomorrow and
he's refusing most anything offered to him to eat. Any suggestions as to
feeding after this and what supplements would you recommend. I said I would
put him on pro-biotics, but am interested in hearing what others would suggest.
