I was lucky!!! My JR had an angel on his shoulder when he had mesenteric
torsion!!!
When JR (Amherst's Lake Dallas) was 8 years old, he was spitting up a little
white foam and had some diarrhea so I took him to the vet. While waiting for
the doctor, he had some diarrhea and I took him outside to go. All of a sudden
he just stayed hunched over, not producing any bowel movements, but was in
obvious distress.
I raced him back inside and told the girl at the front desk that I had an
emergency, that he had some type of blockage and I needed to see the doctor
ASAP. Both his doctor and I were SHOCKED that X-rays didn't show anything
unusual. So bless his vet's heart, she did immediate exploratory surgery. When
she got him opened up, his intestines were dark purple, and as she "unpacked"
them they started pinking up. She caught the problem in time and none of his
intestines suffered any damage.
After his surgery she explained to me what mesenteric torsion is. Until that
day, I had never heard of mesenteric torsion. After reading about it I learned
that the SURVIVAL rate was only between 3 to 6 or 7%. It's one of those rare
conditions that happens so fast you can't "wait & see" - the damage is done
very quickly when the blood supply is cut off to the intestines.
After his surgery he had a normal recovery, nothing unusual.
Fourteen months later, he had stomach bloat/w torsion. And again, I saw the
white foam vomiting, rushed him to the vet, and the angel on his shoulder
brought him thru with flying colors. FWIW - he had NO obvious bloat/torsion
symptoms except for the white foam vomit and later he was in a LOT OF PAIN.
JR was 6 years ole when he came to live with me so I don't know much about his
breeding history. But I was lucky that the people who gave him to me also gave
me two of his puppies and years later I got an older distant relative puppy and
none of these three had any intestinal problems.
JR went to the Bridge when he was 13 years 3 months old.

NOTE: Sorry, I know this is kind of long but I wrote this years ago for a
message board so I just copied and pasted it here. It's much more accurate
than if I had done it from memory.
Morgan ... If I can find his pedigree and get it copied I'll post it or send
you a copy. I'm positive I have it around here somewhere.
