This ruling goes back to 1985 when Judy Teidel put up Ch Kolbrook's Sudden Decision Best in the Maturity and Am Can Ch Earth Wind and Fire of Edan ROM, Best in the Futurity . One was sired by Proven Hill's Jock Hoheneichen ROM and Eatit was sired by Proven Hill's up N' Adam.. Judy owned both dogs. The funny part about this if you go back and look at the catalog, these two males were the only two that later became big winners, out of all the males entered. She truly judged dogs and people that were there knew it, but it was others that pushed for this rule. All the futurities were held on one weekend . I had never finished a Champion yet and knew Earth Wind and Fire was a star from 3 months on. In fact Sally Hayden gave him a BestPuppy at a match when he was 3 months and I was going to register him as Eatit (Weird Al Yankovish's song, as he ate stones as a puppy. and Sally said he looked like he could be a star and to change his name as some would be offended. I had hired George B to show him in 6-9 at the Triangle shows and George wanted him for his futurity and that was where he was showing as handlers had to choose just one and that is why the handling price for futurities went up, and unfortunately never went down again when they went back to different dates. I didn;t even know the judge when I told him he could show him. Maybe it's not a fast AKC rule, but I still think it's in questionable taste to show the dog because it puts the judge in a compromising situation. (See Appearances in the rule book) Public perception at dog shows seems to err on the side of whatever is negative, so it's a no-win for the judge. That assumes you know who the sire and dam is of each entry, that you can remember who the puppy is, and what litter it came from. I remember judging in Mexico and putting up a fantastic bitch. As they took the picture, I was told, (in Spanish) that she was a Ben daughter from Covy-Tucker Hills Kennel. I seldom have any idea who it is in the ring that I am judging. If someone were to tell me ahead who an entry is, I would ask that the dog no longer be shown under me. I wonder if anyone took any of the dogs sired by Rinke's kennel under him? If so, what about those bred by Jane? It is better to assume the judge is going to be honest, and show what the judge would like, than to accept that everyone is crooked, and never show anything related to that judge or his/her kennel. I try to look at this sport as honest. Most judges do what they think it right, and some times they get it, and some times they don't. But, if you want to worry about blood lines, save that for planning your breedings. I remember a long time ago, a co-owner showed a Pallidan son under me at a match, that we co-owned. She did it as a joke. After the match she came up to me with a smile and asked if I knew who he was? When I said, "yes", she asked then why did I gave him a third in the class. I answered, "I didn't like him as much as the first two." I considered when she entered the ring asking her to leave the ring, but instead just decided to go ahead and judge the dogs. That was before I had a judges license, or even thought about the AKC rules. It was not a sanctioned match, and it was easy for me to make that decision. Most judges judge what they see, not what they worry about. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
