Interesting discussion and I have to say I agree with everyone who says there is NO reason for the dogs to be causing a stir in their crates. Dogs bark, I get that, but there is NO reason for the constantant barking, yipping and pacing that I often see in GSD setups. It isn't necessary. Yes, I get these are guard dogs, but I can also walk past Dalmatian crates, Rottweiler crates, etc. and they don't all cause a stir. My GSDs are perfect in crates and always get complimented on their manners. It's all about being ambassadors for your breed - both you and your dogs.
