Also dealt with this about 15 years ago. Gave the dog oral Cyclosporine and Ketoconozol. My vet had read research that the Keto helped keep the cyclosporine in the bloodstream longer thus saving money on the cost of the drug. It worked for a while but unfortunately the fistulas came back. It is such a terrible disease, the pain they go through! Sorry you are having to deal with it! Date: Tue, 10 Mar 2015 10:09:11 -0700 We have been fortunate to not have this for some time now, but years ago we had more than our share.First vet – topical ointment and antibiotic – this did nothing.Second vet – surgery to repair the damage – came right back.Third vet – surgery to remove the anal glands – worked on one not on another.Third vet referred us to – Fourth vet – sweet young thing just out of UC Davis vet school, and not old enough to know anything. Put the dog on oral Cyclosporine. Fistulas gone in two weeks and did not come back. Cyclosporine is given to transplant patients to keep their system from rejecting the transplant. Fistulas are basically the body rejecting tissue. Made sense! Worked! A little pricy, but less than the surgeries.Dave From: showgsd-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:showgsd-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Carolyn Martello Sent: Tuesday, March 10, 2015 8:22 AM To: SHOW LIST Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Fistula Treatment? I have a friend in Canada that has an older dog that recently developed fistula. The Vet gave her metronidazole and an ointment ....and the dog is not improving at all. She is a bit isolated and has no internet.....and hoped I would know someonethat has experience with this. I don't. Is this the current treatment for this problem?Any advice for her?
