In GSDs (and unlike many other breeds), black is a recessive trait. So 2 black dogs can each only contribute the recessive gene for black, resulting in an all-black litter. Of course, we know that black can also be carried along as well. The key difference with the white dogs is this: not only is the white masking gene a recessive, requiring 2 copies of the gene in order to "create" a white puppy, but the white gene is also carried and inherited totally independently from any other color gene. Basically, every white GSD is actually some *other* color underneath its white coat. I like to think of it as the masking gene having thrown a bath towel over the dog. ;) -- Karen C.
