I think the year is right. It was instituted as we used to vote on things
at the annual meeting. It was difficult to know what hand was raised, if it
was a member or not. So, it was decided to close the annual meeting.
A few years later, the club decided that the membership could not vote for
changes at the annual meeting, but could vote to advise the board on
subjects of interest. At that time I suggested we open the meeting. It can
be fun, it is difficult for people who bring non members to the national,
and says we try to exclude others.
I noticed that the first thing Kris wants to do if elected is set up a
closed List to members only. This is exactly the wrong approach. If non
members see what a great group we are, reaching out to everyone and
including everyone who might be interested, they will join. Look at how many
new members the List has, and it is due to the welcome that was always
evident.
It is time to open the annual meeting to everyone who has a love of the
breed, is interested in the workings of the club, and wants to be there. We
do nothing of great secrets at the meeting, and it always seems to be a
great showcase for our club. It is wasted on the members only, and should be
a way to attract new members.
As for a closed List, I will be as anxious to join that, as I am to belong
to a closed club. We need to be proud of what we do, not ashamed to let
others know about it.
If you are not proud of your vote, don't vote that way. We have no trade
secrets, no formulas to keep from the competition, and no patents to
protect. We are a dog club, and it is time to function as one.
